It was a long wait for book 5 in this series, so I had to go back and catch myself up again with book 3 and 4 to remember the characters and what was happening. Once I did this, I was fully engrossed again in following the lives of the later generations. There is a lot of Australian history here and while it does sort of tell what has occurred before, I wouldn't try to read this southern skyes series out of order.Product details

The wait for book five in the series was certainly worth it. Again Sharyn was able to fully engross me in the tales of her characters.
Her way of dealing with history and some of the more sensitive areas give the reader an insider view to the issues of the time.
Both the racial differences and the treatment her characters suffered and her descriptions of the horror that was WW1 had me turning pages as quickly as I could.
Now, with a clearly given clue at the end, I'm looking forward to more in the Southern Skyes series.
This latest offering from Sharyn Bradford Lunn in her Southern Skyes series simply reinforces how good the whole series is. And what an accomplished writer and story teller Sharyn is. This generational journey through time since colonial settlement is a walk through Australia's yesterday's and shows the growth and determination for not only ones family or ones self but ones country.
It leaves behind a bygone era, a time only known to most of us from books and documentaries. In this book I found a feeling of my own families existence and journey from a connection with stories I listened to of people in family photos I never got to meet. But who's story has left an impact on our life, even today. It is a wonderful continuation of a truely and uniquely parallel Australian history. Again a must read and a great gift.

This fifth installment of the Southern Skyes saga may be the best. Lunn takes the issue of racism off the back burner and brings it forward through Bonnie Skyes’ fight for women’s rights and desiring equality for all Australians. The conversations between Bonnie and Jemma provide insight that highlights our need to look beyond physical characteristics and consider the character of each person.
There is a second gem in this story – the Anzac (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) involvement in World War I. Lunn does not sugar coat how the British used their commonwealth allies for the leading edges of assaults. This further highlights the British hubris when it came to their colonies. Lunn does not editorialize, she just presents the facts and shows the human impact.
This story closes with a hint of a sixth story to come and how the Skye family may finally gain the respect they deserve, especially from the McCabes.

Ready for book 6
I was looking forward to this book but am somewhat disappointed in it, that said if there is another book to come in this series I will buy it as I thoroughly enjoyed all the others.
I've read the complete series to date. This last one was okay but not quite as good as the others in the series. Still it's a worthwhile read and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes reading Australian fiction.
